Attenuated total reflection (ATR) analysis identifies liquids or solids based on the attenuation of a detected infrared (IR) light wave as it is reflected inside a crystal on which the sample is placed. As a non-destructive and preparation-free method, it has become crucial to IR detection applications and is much less labor-intensive than the usual method of preparing liquid cells or potassium bromide pellets.
