In 2011, the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL)
continued to enrich and expand the Laboratories for the 21st Century
(Labs21) Annual Conference, made possible through its co-sponsorship
agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S.
Department of Energy.

It is probably safe to say that most people would not advocate
deliberately damaging the
environment, especially if there is no advantage in doing so. But profit
and value also play a
role in many of the choices we have to make. If the design solutions we
advocate to help preserve
the natural world are not financially feasible, they are not likely to
be implemented. We have to
evaluate what our ideas will cost, both initially and in the long term,
as well as how well they
will work.

How does a research facility or biotech company with older laboratories
update existing
facilities to current energy conservation standards? When building a new
facility, it is fairly
straightforward to assess and incorporate green strategies, but the goal
for most institutions
today is updating existing structures. Essentially, the question
becomes: How can an older lab be
improved for better energy consumption and green building standards?

Performance examples can provide valuable information and inspiration
for those wishing to optimize ventilation rates. Commissioning, a key
step in making sure optimization works as planned, is also discussed.

With advancing technology of ventilated containment systems (VCS) and with heightened concern over material hazards, environmental protection and energy conservation, equipment efficacy must be assured. Consequently, commissioning has become an essential discipline for the effective construction and operation of laboratory facilities.
