Researchers
in Switzerland have created a new nanocomposite that combines the best
features of graphene and protein fibrils, the two main ingredients of a
specialized type of paper. The material is created in much the same way
as normal cellulose paper, but the properties are far different. Shape
memory, electrical conductivity, and hydrophobia all offer interesting
application possibilities.

touring the Rolls-Royce Crosspointe jet engine disc manufacturing
facility in Prince George, Va., on March 9, President Obama announced
his intention to build a network of up to 15 manufacturing innovation
institutes to serve as regional hubs of manufacturing excellence. The
move is intended to make U.S. manufacturers more competitive and
encourage investment.

new study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows that the
rapid rise in low-wage manufacturing industries overseas has had a
significant impact on the United States. The disappearance of U.S.
manufacturing jobs frequently leaves workers unemployed for years, if
not permanently, while creating a drag on local economies and raising
the amount of taxpayer-borne social insurance necessary to keep workers
and their families afloat.

to a study out Wednesday venture capitalists invested more money in
more U.S. startups in the third quarter than they did a year earlier.
Though overall investments dropped from the second quarter, the software
industry showed especially big jumps in venture capital quarter to

impedance tomography and produces a 3-D image in real time from the
inside of pipelines and tanks used by the process industries. According
to the company, the pulp and paper industry could benefit from its use
by optimizing its utilization of broke, the discard paper produced from
breaks in a continuous mill process.
