Since Darwin, scientists have been fascinated and intrigued by the
social behavior of
insects and how that behavior might contribute to our understanding of
social evolution and development. The arthropod, specifically the Monomorium
pharaonis or pharaoh ant, is well-suited to this research because
of its reliable social system and genetic basis. Unlike most ants, the
pharaoh ant reproduces readily in the lab and has a brief life span, and
succeeding generations can be maintained easily and indefinitely.
