Butterfly wings inspire thermal imaging breakthrough at GE

Butterfly wings inspire thermal imaging breakthrough at GE

Researchers at GE, working with the help of a DARPA grant for sensor development, found that when infrared radiation hit the wing of the Morpho butterfly, the nanostructures on the wing heated up and expanded, causing iridescence, or color change. By adding carbon nanotubes, scientists can predictably affect the rate of radiation absorption and increase sensitivity.

TOC Analyzers Handle Tough Samples

TOC Analyzers Handle Tough Samples

GE Analytical Instruments offers its Sievers InnovOx laboratory and on-line total organic carbon (TOC) analyzers, which run a variety of industrial process, wastewater, and environmental water TOC samples—including brine, humic acid, and cellulose—with excellent uptime.

GE helps Canada’s oil sands industry boost water preservation in Alberta

As Canada's oil sands industry seeks to maximize the role of water recycling to protect local fresh water supplies, GS Engineering & Construction has selected GE to supply the produced water evaporation and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system for the Blackgold Oil Sands project, located near Conklin, Alberta.

GE and MIT collaborate on smart ultrasound technology development

Supporting its quest through healthymagination to reach more patients with better health care globally, GE has joined with MIT to create a Medical Electronic Device Realization Center (MEDRC) at MIT. The MEDRC will help drive improvements in medical imaging systems and devices that take medical diagnosis, treatments, and monitoring to the next level.

GE opens new oil and gas manufacturing facility in the UK

Demonstrating its commitment to expanding its U.K. manufacturing presence, GE's Oil & Gas business has officially opened a new wireline manufacturing and headquarters facility in Farnborough, Hampshire, United Kingdom.

GE to build nation's largest solar power plant

The technology giant anticipates the new factory, which will produce solar power panels certified by the National Renewable Energy Lab, will employ 400 people and provide enough panels to power 800,000 homes per year. The plant’s location, however is still up in the air.

World’s first offshore gravity-based LNG terminal

World’s first offshore gravity-based LNG terminal

At the heart of this engineering solution, deployed about 17 km from the town of Rovigo, near Venice, Italy, is an enormous reinforced concrete box that rests on the sea floor and houses two LNG storage tanks. The artificial island now represents about 10% of Italy’s annual gas demand and is the first offshore deployment of GE’s dual-fuel low emissions gas turbine system.

Taking x-ray detection up a notch

Amorphous silicon chip arrays coupled with scintillators are replacing x-ray film detection techniques. Their large dynamic range for intensities compared to film are one of the main reasons why these flat panel detectors are so attractive. Researchers at General Electric Global Research Center, Niskuyana, N.Y., and General Electric Inspection Technologies, Cincinnati, Ohio, have developed the GE Revolution Real Time Radiography Detector System.
