3M, IBM to develop new types of adhesive to create 3D semiconductors

3M and IBM announced that the two companies plan to jointly develop the first adhesives that can be used to package semiconductors into densely stacked silicon "towers." The companies are aiming to create a new class of materials, which will make it possible to build, for the first time, commercial microprocessors composed of layers of up to 100 separate chips.

Electric cable goes around the bend

Electric cable goes around the bend

The 3M Twin Axial Cable, SL8800 is designed to meet data rate requirements of more than 10 Gbps while making sharp turns and folds—with little or no impact on electrical performance and overall signal integrity.

ORNL establishes carbon fiber composites consortium

Fourteen companies have agreed to join with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to establish the Oak Ridge Carbon Fiber Composites Consortium, which will work to accelerate the development, demonstration and commercial application of new low-cost carbon fiber and composites materials in many different industry sectors.

Radius and 3M sign BA058 transdermal drug delivery agreement

Radius Health, Inc. (Radius) and 3M Drug Delivery Systems (3M) announced an agreement to collaborate on the development of a transdermal delivery option of BA058, Radius’ novel, proprietary PTHrP (parathyroid hormone-related protein) analog, for the treatment of osteoporosis.

3M receives DOE funds to dramatically lower PV system costs

As part of the SunShot Initiative, the Dept. of Energy has provided financial assistance to solar film manufacturer 3M, which will use the money over a three-year span to develop its Ultra Barrier Solar Film. The flexible film is a promising substitute for glass in the production of thin-film solar cells.

3M buying maker of people tracking devices

On Monday, 3M Co. announced its plan to pay $943 million for Cogent Inc., a maker of finger and palm print readers and face and eye recognition devices. Today, Israeli company Attenti Holdings is being acquired for $230 million. Attenti uses GPS and RF technology to track people on probation or patients in senior care centers.

Going against the old grain

Going against the old grain

Shaped grain technology from 3M Company changes the way abrasive grains cut materials surfaces. The 3M Cubitron II Fibre Disc 982C and 3M Cubitron II Metalworking Belt 984F products are designed to be self-sharpening.

Halogen-free embedded capacitance material

Design engineers in the electronics industry who are seeking ways to improve power integrity and reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) while meeting halogen-free requirements now have a new solution to meet their needs. The 3M Electronic Solutions Division now offers halogen-free versions of its Embedded Capacitance Material (ECM).

3M releases material library for use in ANSYS Simulation Software

Printed circuit board (PCB) and integrated circuit (IC) package design engineers can now download a simulated model of Embedded Capacitance Materials (ECM) from 3M for use in HFSS and SIwave engineering simulation software.
