Promens of Iceland, a manufacturer of consumer and specialty packaging and vehicle components, is preparing the opening of a new, state-of-the-art plastic conversion factory near Magdeburg, Germany. The new plant will be in a modern industrial estate, featuring a 30,000 ft2 production floor with high hygienic standards, as well as 4,900 ft2 administration and technical services building. The buildings were erected in 2008 for a medical company, which was closed in 2010.
Two Promens facilities in Görzke and Winsen will be integrated into the new facility and the third, in Witzenhausen, Promens Theessen, Germany, will be integrated into the Promens facility in Neumunster. All three are currently in older buildings, the oldest dating back to the 1890s, which considerably restricts growth and the ability to adapt production and logistics to modern standards.
“This will totally change the working environment for those of our employees who choose to follow us to the new plant,” says Dragan Stjepanovic, Vice President of Promens Chemical Packaging. “We are currently working out with employees and local workers unions how the move can be executed with as little effect as possible on current employees, but it is still too early to say how many people will follow us to the new plant. The new facility, called Promens Theessen, is ideally suited for world-class capability in productivity and material flow.”
Formerly housing a medical company, the production hall has a medical cleanroom standard, opening for new and exciting opportunities for Promens in the region. It also has the space and infrastructure to meet growing customer needs for additional products and production volume for years to come. The facility is located in an industrial area which allows for 24/7 operation, right next to the A2 freeway, in the heart of Europe with easy access to Western and Eastern Europe, as well as Scandinavia.
The facility stands on a 184,000 ft2 lot and the company plans to add a 33,000 ft2 storage facility next year, allowing it to close several rented storage spaces currently used in the region.
“This restructuring of our business in Germany will create a new base for our Chemical Packaging business as well as our overall company strategy,” says Jakob Sigurdsson, CEO of Promens. “The new Promens Theessen plant will allow us to grow our business, optimize internal logistics and further improve our standards, which in the end allows us to serve our customers even better than we do today.”
Promens Theessen is scheduled to start production in the fall of 2014.
