48th Annual Laboratory of the Year Awards
This prestigious, international competition showcases new and emerging thinking, sustainable practices and creative responses to challenges in the design, construction and operation of modern laboratories.
The editors of R&D Magazine and Laboratory Design are now accepting entries to the international Laboratory of the Year competition. This annual award recognizes the best new and renovated laboratories that combine all aspects of the building into a superior working environment.
A new or renovated laboratory should have an appropriate site, an appealing architecture, and a functional arrangement that encourages innovation and communication between all users, including scientists, engineers, technicians, students and support staff. In addition, the facility should provide for the efficient use of resources, the safety of personnel and experiments, convenient/safe ingress and egress for both humans (including handicapped) and materials.
Due to an increasing number of innovative laboratory renovation projects and the unique design concepts that they entail, judges for the 2014 Laboratory of the Year competition will have the option of designating distinct awards, including Renovated Laboratory of the Year Award, Adaptive Re-use Award, Fit-Out Award or other desired categories, along with the traditional Laboratory of the Year Award for new construction. All entries, including renovation projects, will be considered equally for the Laboratory of the Year status.
Former winning organizations have received international attention and interest from media and potential customers.
1. For this competition, “laboratory” refers to any building—or wing, addition or portion of a building—that contains one or more work areas dedicated to research, software development, quality assurance, teaching, forensic/clinical/environmental functions or testing and standards.
2. Any new freestanding laboratory, major interior renovation of an existing laboratory, laboratory created as an addition to an existing building, addition/renovation combination, or lab fit-out within an existing building may be entered. New campuses consisting primarily of research facilities are also eligible. Buildings consisting primarily of office space, pilot plants, or manufacturing/production space are not eligible.
3. Laboratories completed and occupied between August 1, 2012, and December 31, 2013, may be entered. (Labs completed after July 31, 2013, may be entered in either the 2014 competition or the 2015 competition, but not in both.)
