2010 R & D Innovator of the Year: Amit Goyal, PhD

Goyal-250Amit Goyal, R&D Magazine’s 11th Innovator of the Year, is best known for his contributions to the practical use of high-temperature superconductors and his successful efforts in the development and fabrication of wires that allow HTS to be adopted in the commercial marketplace.

His broad technical contributions have been in the area of large-area, lowcost, high-performance, “flexible electronic” devices, including superconducting devices and photovoltaics, as well as 3D self-assembly of nanodots of complex materials within another complex material for device applications.

Goyal has won five R&D 100 Awards. Most recently, he received a 2010 R&D 100 Award for an ultra-high performance HTS wire based on a strain-mediated, 3D self-assembly process for use in applications in high magnetic fields. Previously, Goyal has been awarded for pioneering the only third-generation HTS wire technology for low-AC loss applications and inventing the RABiTS process for fabrication of second-generation HTS wires, which is now being used globally.

He has also successfully developed flexible, single-crystal-like, semiconductor substrates for electronic device applications such as solar cells, which have led to the formation of the startup TexMat. This technology also earned a 2010 R&D 100 Award.
