VI Systems GmbH introduced the T40-850C transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA) and the R40-850 receiver optical subassembly (ROSA) for data rates of up to 40 Gbit/s. The receiver includes a PIN photodetector with an input range from 700-890 nm wavelength and a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) in a compact high frequency TO-style micropackage. The transmitter combines the proprietary VI Systems 850nm VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) and an optional driver IC. The transmitter and receiver TO-style package is coupled with a 50/125 um multi- mode fiber and will also be available with a LC receptacle. The dimensions of the fiber coupled assemblies are 6 mm (height) and 6 mm (width). The overall length including a plastic boot for strain relief of the optical fiber is 40 mm. The receptacle type package is smaller. It is specified with a length of less than 12 mm.

The T40-850 transmitter is specified to operate over a temperature range from 0 to +85 degree C. The supply voltage is 3.3V. The TOSA features a low power consumption of only 130mW. The T40-850 includes the latest generation of ultrahigh-speed VCSEL from VI Systems which feature an optimized epitaxial design.

The R40-850 receiver supply voltage is + 3.3V. It features a low power consumption of only 110mW. The ROSA includes a proprietary photodetector chip in combination with the latest generation of transimpedance amplifier chip from VI Systems to ensure maximum performance at very low power consumption.

Target applications are short reach optical transceiver modules used in optical communication networks and optical interconnects in the computer industry. Future standards for serial transmission at ultrahigh-speed data rates are currently developed within Common Electrical Standard (CEI-28Gbit/s) Fiber Channel 17 Gbit/s  and Ethernet IEEE 40/100 Gbit/s as well as in a number of custom specific application.
