GENESYS 10S VisThermo Fisher Scientific Inc. announced the GENESYS 10S Vis, the GENESYS 10S UV-Vis, and the BioMate 3S spectrophotometers, the latest additions to its range of high-performance instruments. Designed for both research and routine analysis, these new models deliver high-quality data. The models offer local instrument control with embedded software that is simple and straightforward for routine samples, yet also has functionality for more demanding analysis. The Thermo Scientific GENESYS 10S spectrophotometers provide solutions for a multitude of laboratory requirements including wavelength scanning, qualitative analysis, kinetics, and fixed wavelength measurements. Built on the sample platform, the Thermo Scientific BioMate 3S incorporates the same hardware, but adds the flexibility of built-in biological test methods.

The GENESYS platform instruments are already used by more than 17,000 customers worldwide in the biochemical, chemical research and production, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and academic markets. The new GENESYS 10S instruments carry forward the traditions of the existing products while incorporating many new and improved capabilities. The increased scanning performance of the instruments dramatically improves the time it takes to acquire high-quality data. Faster scanning results from improved electronics allow users to acquire scan data at speeds up to 4,200 nm per minute.

Compact in design, the Thermo Scientific instruments deliver a space-efficient solution to crowded laboratories without sacrificing performance. A front panel USB port allows for unlimited method and data storage on memory devices. The instruments also benefit from USB connectivity to external printers and a computer for enhanced flexibility. The spectrophotometers incorporate an easy-to-read LCD display which is backlit for lower power usage and a longer life. The user-friendly embedded software is driven from an integrated, chemical-resistant keypad. The easy-to-learn embedded software enables rapid method set-up. Customized methods can be stored for later use, allowing for complete customization saving the user time.

The Thermo Scientific BioMate 3S offers cost-effective analysis of life science samples. Enhanced 1.8 nm resolution and a long-life xenon light source provide the ideal measurement resolution for life science measurements and a lower cost of ownership. No warm-up time is required, meaning that measurements are obtained instantly and samples are not continuously exposed to UV light. This also ensures that sensitive samples are not damaged. The xenon lamp also does not warm over time like conventional sources, keeping the temperature in the sample compartment stable for kinetics measurements. The BioMate 3S includes pre-configured test methods for nucleic acid, protein and cell growth measurements.

To provide customers with a comprehensive UV-Visible solution, the GENESYS 10S series includes a broad range of accessories and application software. From Peltier temperature control and external measurements with fiber probes to long pathlength cell holders and sipper systems, Thermo Scientific accessories enable users to create custom analyzers and ensure versatility for a range of sample types and applications. Optional software control of the instrument allows data to be exported for further analysis. Thermo Fisher also offers a range of software dedicated to color determination, material science, and enzymatic food analysis.

P2i showcases liquid repellent nano-coating for hearing aids

At the AudiologyNOW! 2010 show in San Diego next month, UK-based coatings company P2i will display their relatively new Aridion liquid-repellant nano-coating. Designed for exposure to humidity or sweat, the polymer layer is applied by a pulsed ion gas process that lower’s the hearing aid’s surface energy, coaxing water away from delicate components.
