A revolution in airplane towing

Each utility vehicle at the airport seems to be a little bit different. There are baggage trucks, hydrant trucks, conveyor belt vehicles and airplane tugs. A new vehicle designed and built by Hammonds Technical Services Inc. is intended to fill several of these roles in a single reconfigurable vehicle.

The ODV or Omni Directional Vehicle, shown in operation at left Falcon Field in Georgia, is, as its name suggests, able to change direction immediately without turn limitations. This ability is in part because of the wheel design, which permits instantaneous direction change. The other innovation is the radial hitch, which remains in a static position while the vehicle revolves around. The operator doesn’t need to look over a shoulder to guide the plane or other towed vehicles.
