AutoNation January sales of new cars rise

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — AutoNation Inc. said Thursday that its new vehicle sales rose 7 percent in January from a year ago, boosted by strong demand for import and luxury vehicles.

The Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based automotive retailer said it sold 15,966 new vehicles last month.

Sales of import vehicles increased 9 percent to 8,097, while demand for vehicles made by domestic automakers rose 4 percent to 4,894. Sales of premium luxury cars and trucks rose 8 percent to 2,975.

In morning trading, AutoNation shares fell 17 cents to $36.10.
