Some major airlines are considering letting passengers tag their own checked bags at the airport before boarding their flights.
American Airlines parent AMR Corp., Delta Air Lines Inc. and Air Canada are in talks with the Transportation Security Administration to try out the approach at select airports, USA Today reported Sunday.
The luggage tags typically show a traveler's destination airport code and a bar code, which airport security scans when the baggage is screened before being loaded onto aircraft.
It's not uncommon for travelers in airports outside of the United States to print out the tags without agent supervision and place them on their checked luggage. But if the airlines proceed with a test run, it would be the first time it's done in the U.S. by someone other than a ticket agent.
American Airlines and Air Canada are looking at rolling out a trial of the approach in Boston later this year. Passengers would use a self-service kiosk to print out the luggage tags, but they would still need to see an agent to check their identification and scan the tagged luggage.
