After 65 years in Owensboro, the General Electric Co. announced plans to close its local motors plant next year.

Matt Conkrite, a spokesman for the company's industrial business, told the Messenger-Inquirer on Friday that 109 employees will lose their jobs at the GE Motors Plant on Old Hartford Road.

Conkrite said the plant will close no earlier than October 31, 2010.

Still, Conkrite said they are encouraging employees to propose cost savings ideas that would allow the plant to stay open.

Nick Brake, president of the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp., said he'll be working to try to find incentives that could save the plant.
