Audi AG saw a 37 percent annual increase in sales in China in September, the best single month ever in the country, the German automaker said Tuesday.

Ingolstadt-based Audi, a unit of Europe's biggest carmaker Volkswagen AG, said it sold more than 15,000 cars in the country during the month. In the January-September period, the company sold 108,859 cars in China, including Hong Kong, a 20 percent increase on year-ago levels.

Sales of the A4 sedan were up 53 percent, while sales of the A6 sedan were up 16 percent, the company said.

Audi is now on track for a record year, said sales and marketing official Peter Schwarzenbauer.

The company is increasing its production capacity at its Changchun plant and plans to expand its dealer and service network in China to include more than 200 locations by 2015, it said. Audi currently has 139 dealerships in 88 cities there.

Audi will report full global sales October 9.

Shares of Audi were unchanged at euro400.56 ($589) in Frankfurt morning trading.
