More bad news for the oil refining industry in southern New Jersey.

San Antonio, Texas-based Valero Energy Corp. says it plans to eliminate 100 jobs out of the 550 it has in its Paulsboro plant.

The company says it will seek voluntary retirements rather than layoffs. Both union and salaried workers are to be targeted.

Valero says the struggling economy has reduced demand for fuel. Last month it said it would idle two units at its Delaware City, Del., plant, cutting about 150 jobs.

Earlier in the week, Sunoco Inc., said it would indefinitely idle its nearby facility, Eagle Point in West Deptford. That facility has 400 full-time workers.
