Xerox Corp. retirees are seeking a federal court order to halt cuts to their health care coverage.

Ten former employees from upstate New York, Florida and Connecticut sued the office equipment company on behalf of thousands of colleagues hired before 1989.

Based in Norwalk, Conn., Xerox said in September 2008 that up to a quarter of its retirees will be stripped of supplemental health care coverage beginning next year. The retirees claim that bid by the company to save $11 million annually violates long-standing promises of coverage for life.

The company declined to comment on the lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in Rochester.

On Monday, Xerox said it is buying Dallas-based outsourcer Affiliated Computer Services for about $6.4 billion in cash and stock.
