El Paso Electric Co. said Wednesday its board named utility industry veteran George A. Williams as senior vice president and chief operating officer, effective Oct. 5.

J. Frank Bates, who has served as president and chief operating officer, will continue to serve as president until he retires in March after 37 years at the company.

Williams, who has 25 years of experience in the electric utility industry, most recently served as senior vice president of operations for Commonwealth Edison, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corp.

El Paso Electric provides power to about 363,000 retail and wholesale customers in a 10,000 square mile area of the Rio Grande valley in west Texas and southern New Mexico.
