The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) will create a 10.25-acre research park within the 72-acre Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance, Calif. LA BioMed is an independent nonprofit research institute, and is working closely with the County of Los Angeles to implement a public/private biotech partnership. ZGF Architects LLP, Los Angeles, will provide the master plan for the site, where LA BioMed already has some facilities but did not previously have a guiding long-term development plan. ZGF is working in cooperation with general contractor Webcor Builders, and will also design the Phase 1 research facility, a 70,000 ft
2 building including the 15,000-ft
2 Biological Resources Center. Elsewhere in Torrance, LA BioMed is using federal stimulus funding from the NIH to build the new Chronic Diseases Clinical Research Center, a two-story, 23,000-ft
2 research building that will consolidate research programs of existing groups studying chronic diseases, including atherosclerosis and HIV/AIDS.
