Is LEED Platinum passé? Meet the next hurdle: the super-sustainable International Living Building Challenge. Originating with the Cascadia Building Council in the Pacific Northwest, the challenge (now overseen by the International Living Future Institute at
https://ilbi.org/) involves meeting seven mandatory "petals." Site, water, energy, health, and materials echo LEED’s structure, but beauty and "equity" are additions. The "petals" involve lists of imperatives, including net-zero energy, net-zero water, and a list of forbidden materials. Only four Living Buildings have been certified; ~100 more projects are registered. Driving regionalism, in part through sourcing rules, is part of the standard’s rationale. ILFI CEO Jason McLennan, LEED AP, calls the LBC "complementary to LEED, but not competitive."
