Description: Greenhouse complex balances the historic and agrarian character of the university's roots with cutting-edge research in plant, soil, and insect sciences. Project combined a new research greenhouse, renovated teaching greenhouse, and research laboratory. The greenhouses have sophisticated automated control systems for lighting, temperature, humidity, irrigation, and fertilization. The laboratory facility includes two research laboratories, a wet/dry botany classroom and a seed germination facility, and is a modern architectural interpretation of a New England barn, allowing it to blend with the greenhouses. Project was designed to meet LEED Silver and features a stormwater retention system, sustainably harvested woods, a heat wheel energy recovery system for the laboratories, and evaporative cooling for the greenhouse space.
