Maxiumum Energy Efficiency Research Lab

Oak Ridge (Tenn.) National Laboratory Maximum Energy Efficiency Research Lab. Design: UT-Battelle/Oak Ridge National Laboratory/Cannon Design.

Oak Ridge (Tenn.) National Laboratory Maximum Energy Efficiency Research Lab.

Budget: $10 million.

Size: 16,600 ft2.

Completion date: June 2012.

Project team: UT-Battelle, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Cannon Design, St. Louis (architect); Fulghum MacIndoe & Associates, Inc., Knoxville (civil engineer); Hedstrom Design, Knoxville (landscape architect); McCarthy Building Cos. Inc., St. Louis (construction manager)

Description: Oak Ridge National Laboratory, whose campus is managed by UT-Battelle and primarily funded by the Dept. of Energy, is projected to begin construction on their new, $10 million, 16,600-ft2 laboratory devoted to energy-efficient building projects, including HVAC systems and exterior building envelope materials. The lab houses high bay facilities with an overhead crane, low bay facilities for HVAC system research, a data center and offices. Accompanying the lab facility will be two completely enclosed "research platforms" where McCarthy will provide a steel frame, and later, a building envelope subcontractor, contracted directly to UT-Battelle, will apply a skin on the framework. These platforms allow for a fairly simple switch-out of building envelope systems to facilitate the study of skin/thermal efficiency design concepts. One research platform will be a 1,600-ft2, two-story facility with a lightly sloped roof. The second will be a 3,200-ft2, one-story building, also with slightly sloped roof. The two research platforms will have data connections back to the data center within the main MAXLAB research building. The project is targeting a LEED Gold certification.
