Brown Univ., Metcalf laboratories renovation, Providence, R.I.
Budget: $42 million.
Size: 81,000 ft2.
Completion date: 4Q2010.
Project team: Leers Weinzapfel, Boston (architect); Dimeo Construction Co., Providence (construction manager).
Description: Project will update Metcalf Chemistry Laboratory and Metcalf Resaerdh Laboratory, providing a home for the newly formed Dept. of Cognitive, Linguistic and Psychological Sciences. The program includes classrooms, labs, and meeting and lounge areas to support collaborative work. LEED Silver is targeted in the renovation, which will make it possible for Brown to hire seven new faculty members in the areas of cognitive/behavioral neuroscience, development, perception and action, language and linguistics, personality and social psychology, and cognition. The decision to renovate occurred after the university determined that a new lab was not cost-effective given budgetary constraints.
