Science building designed to produce power

The Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) at the Univ. of British Columbia, Vancouver, will go the “carbon neutral” mantra one better by being a net energy producer, as well as a greenhouse-gas mitigating facility. The new $37 million building, now under construction and scheduled to be finished in summer 2011, was designed by Busby Perkins+Will. Its features include electricity, lighting, heating, water supply, liquid waste treatment, ventilation and cooling powered by systems involving the sun, wind and ground. For more: www.cirs.ubc.ca
