Among other science-related projects, federal stimulus dollars will fund a $2 million lab upgrade at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, Colo. New testing equipment will be purchased and installed at NREL’s Battery Thermal and Life Test Facility, which will necessitate utility and facility upgrades. The lab is working to help manufacturers develop electric-drive batteries that can be feasibly mass-produced to improve vehicle energy efficiency while addressing concerns about safety, affordability, durability and performance.
