Blue roofs: A different shade of green?

Vegetated roofs have been gaining ground in the design and construction community for their sustainability advantages. A different twist, the “blue roof,” uses flat roof planes as a collector that harvests stormwater to be used as a resource. Blue roof design uses flow controls atop downspouts to regulate runoff, with some water temporarily stored atop the roof in gutters. Later the water is released in a controlled way for reuse. The design is suggested as an option for urbanized areas where space for stormwater detention is limited or where impervious pavement makes it difficult to prevent flooding from runoff.
