Description: Facility expands the Univ. of Michigan Health System’s capacity for eye care, research and education, and unites diabetes researchers as they work to accelerate the search for a cure and prevention. The building program includes seven eye care clinics plus new suites for refractive and cosmetic surgeries; the upper floors support the Brehm Center for Diabetes Research, as well as labs for vision scientists. The design features an open lab layout; shared procedure and euipment areas; a central connecting staircase; and centrally located lab services. Large windows allow natural light to fill both clinics and common spaces. The lab is part of a master plan for system expansion across the river from the main medical campus. Funding for the facility was made possible in part by a gift by Delores and Willilam Brehm, motivated by their desire to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
