Budget: n.a.

Size: 250,000 ft2.

Project team: NBBJ, Seattle (architect, interiors, lab planner); Jacobs Consultancy, Tarrytown, N.Y. (lab consultant); Affiliated Engineers NW Inc., Seattle (MEP engineer); Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Seattle (structural engineer); BN Builders, Seattle (contractor).

Completion date: 2Q2009.

Description: Independent research institute plans to build 2 million ft2 campus in Denney Triangle, a burgeoning hub for biotech and medical research activities. Phase 1 is the renovation of an existing 11-story biotech research facility, encompassing lab and support space as well as office and conference areas and a public lobby. High density was an objective of the client; labs were reconfigured to consolidate all plumbing along a central utility spine. Benches can now be removed or reconfigured more easily. The labs are more open and collaborative than the institute’s prior spaces and are expected to foster interaction. A lobby renovation addressed security and noise concerns with the use of acoustical materials and optical turnstiles.
