A new $106 million, 100,000-ft2 lab at the venerable Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory complex in Laurel Hollow, N.Y., hails back to the Long Island site’s roots as a whaling village. The labs are located in—and under—six low-rise buildings that mimic a village and courtyard. The colorful facilities are clustered into a group at the site’s highest point, and provide access to a network of underground corridors and labs, with an emphasis on genomics facilities. The organization’s supercomputer, now in leased space in Greenlawn, N.Y., will also move to a space beneath the courtyard. The design was created by Centerbrook Architects and Planners.
