2010 R&D 100 Winner
i2/3DW, The Next-generation 3D Display Technology with Integral 2D and 3D for the Naked Eye from Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute is a next-generation 3D display technology that is the first to fully and seamlessly integrate 3D displays for the naked eye with traditional 2D information. The technology relies on layering a conventional 2D LCD with ITRI’s 2D/3D switching layer and a dynamic back-light LED unit. The viewer only needs to move eyesight focus onto the desired part of the screen; the best quality image—whether 2D or 3D—is displayed.
Fronted by a conventional liquid crystal display panel, the display features a dynamic back-light unit similar to an LED matrix-based BLU in many laptop PC displays. The 2D/3D switching component, inserted between the two other layers, handles the automatic switching of individual pixels in the first panel between its 2D and 3D display mode. This layer is made of two polarization films, a microretarder, and a low-resolution LC panel.
