2010 R&D 100 Winner
The sun and wind are clean energy sources, but can be intermittent and unpredictable. Utilities need predictable sources of power despite changeable skies and fickle winds; energy storage is an answer. Xtreme Power, Kyle, Texas, has developed the Dynamic Power Resource, a comprehensive, cost-effective, and portable solution for utilities that need short-term power.
The system features proprietary PowerCells fuel cells that provide utility-scale energy storage; a micro-second control system with three-tiered-redundant safety features; power electronics to enable high power at high efficiency; and system integration.
In Xtreme Power’s technology, sulfuric acid electrolytes in the chemical capacitor are encapsulated in pores of the active material that comprises the bi-polar plate. This creates a greater surface area for ion exchange and ion pathways measured on the 0.001 µm level, compared to several inches in traditional lead-acid battery designs. Greater energy flow results in the ability to store more power. The PowerCells contain no fluids, are non-toxic, and are produced with 95% recyclable materials.
