2010 R&D 100 Winner
Establishing the most appropriate treatment for a glaucoma patient is best accomplished with continuous monitoring of intra-ocular pressure (IOP). The SENSIMED Triggerfish is a non-invasive contact lens device, developed by SENSIMED AG, Lausanne, Switzerland, with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, to continuously monitor IOP for up to 24 hours.
Unlike other devices that measure the reaction to pressure applied to the eye, the Triggerfish monitors fluctuations in IOP by measuring the changes in the diameter of the eye. A contact lens containing a MEMS circular strain gauge, an antenna, and a telemetry microprocessor is placed on the patient. Power is sent wirelessly from an external system to the lens. Information is sent from the contact lens to the external system and stored on a portable, battery-operated recorder. The patient goes home and returns to the ophthalmologist’s office the next day. The data is uploaded to a computer for analysis.
