2010 R&D 100 Winner
Kinetex_PhenomemexThe Kinetex Core-Shell Technology HPLC Columns from Phenomenex, Inc., Torrance, Calif., makes it possible for labs to achieve ultra-high efficiencies on conventional liquid chromatography (LC) systems and high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) systems. The result: lower levels of detection and quantitation, the identification of more impurities, higher throughput and lab productivity, and increased solvent savings.

The columns are available with 1.7 µm and 2.6 µm core-shell HPLC particles. The 1.7 μm particles have a 0.23 μm porous shell and a 1.25 μm solid core. The 2.6 μm particles have a 0.35 μm porous shell and a 1.9 μm solid core.

Kinetex core-shell particles are not fully porous like 3 µm and 5 µm particles packed in most of the columns used today. The core-shell particles are engineered to have a near perfect particle size distribution and uniform particle morphology. The design results in efficiencies on the 2.6 µm Kinetex particle that are comparable to sub-2 µm fully porous particles.

JEOL to launch world's smallest solid-state NMR probe

According to JEOL Resonance, a new benchmark for resolution and benchmark will be set with its introduction next week of a new 0.75-mm solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe. The probe is capable of high resolution sample analysis by spinning the sample at 110 kHz, the world's fastest spinning speed for NMR.

Energy Harvesting Subsystems for Wireless Sensors

Nextreme Thermal Solutions has developed two new energy harvesting subsystems for the plumbing and HVAC industries. The subsystems are the latest additions to Nextreme's Thermobility energy harvesting platform that uses thin-film thermoelectric technology to convert available thermal energy into electric power for a variety of autonomous self-powered applications.
