2010 R&D 100 Winner
The Thermo Fisher Scientific Microm HM 550 Cryostat series with cold disinfection, developed by Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., Runcorn, U.K., helps reduce the exposure of clinical laboratory workers to chemicals and biological hazards by automatically disinfecting an entire cold cryo-chamber using a non-toxic reagent.
The disinfection agent is introduced as a mist into the cryostat chamber. After a waiting period, the hair-frost-like agent is displaced into a colder area of the chamber by sublimation. It is then converted to a liquid by sporadic defrosting phases of the colder area, and drained.
The system uses Sanosil (Sanosil Ltd., Switzerland), a powerful disinfectant and virucide that harness the antimicrobial powers of hydrogen peroxide and silver. The combination of these two ingredients is proven to be 99.9% effective against more than 144 pathogens.
