2010 R&D 100 Winner
SFC_Fusion_A5_AuroraDrug discovery researchers turn to supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) for its separation speed, low energy demands, and use of CO2 for the mobile phase. However, poor UV and MS baseline noise performance have relegated SFC systems to screening applications.

The SFC Fusion A5 module from Aurora SFC Systems, Inc., Toughkenamon, Pa., is an accessory module for an existing high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system that operates in the 100 to 400 bar pressure range. By preconditioning the CO2 supplied to the HPLC system and regulating the backpressure against which the system delivers its output, the module allows the original HPLC pumping system to pump liquid CO2 with the same noise performance as water. An HPLC system with the SFC Fusion A5 module can function as effectively as an SFC system.

The original HPLC system remains intact with its original control system and can be disconnected from the SFC Fusion A5 module as needed.

JEOL to launch world's smallest solid-state NMR probe

According to JEOL Resonance, a new benchmark for resolution and benchmark will be set with its introduction next week of a new 0.75-mm solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe. The probe is capable of high resolution sample analysis by spinning the sample at 110 kHz, the world's fastest spinning speed for NMR.

Energy Harvesting Subsystems for Wireless Sensors

Nextreme Thermal Solutions has developed two new energy harvesting subsystems for the plumbing and HVAC industries. The subsystems are the latest additions to Nextreme's Thermobility energy harvesting platform that uses thin-film thermoelectric technology to convert available thermal energy into electric power for a variety of autonomous self-powered applications.
