2009 R&D 100 Winner
Wear plates are used in severe manufacturing environments to protect expensive industrial parts, machines, and equipment from exposure to damaging impact and wear. The NanoSteel Company, Idaho Falls, Idaho, developed the Super Hard Steel Wear Plate for mining, processing, and industrial applications, by going small. The SHS 9700 and SHS 9800 overlay wear plate system is formed by a carbon steel or low alloy steel substrate with a highly engineered weld overlay. By utilizing its proprietary nanomaterial platform, the company refined the microstructure of its nanomaterial products to create steel alloys that are harder, stronger, and tougher than conventional steel materials. In a field trial, a thinner NanoSteel overlay wear plate provided a 2:1 service lifetime improvement over a thicker competing material. The SHS 9700 and SHS 9800 are patented eight-element glass forming steel alloys engineered so that deposits applied as weld overlay are produced with extreme resistance for abrasion while maintaining toughness.
