2008 R&D 100 Winner
Improving the value and performance of components made from stainless steel and other alloys was the impetus behind the SAT12 Patented Surface-Hardening Process, developed by Peter Williams, Sunniva Collins, and Steve Marx at Swagelok Co., Solon, Ohio. The SAT12 process dramatically enhances the surface hardness of stainless steel while improving corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and fatigue properties, while retaining significant ductility. It enables ordinary stainless steel to adopt certain performance characteristics of expensive alloys such as Hastelloy or titanium. By endowing ordinary stainless steel with these properties, the SAT12 treatment stands to reduce costs and energy consumption in aerospace, defense, and marine installations as well as general industry.
