2008 R&D 100 Winner
Cardiac failure is the number one killer of firefighters, accounting for close to half of the line-of-duty deaths in the past four years. A leading cause of cardiac failure is heat stress-related issues such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Traditional flame-resistant clothing, while offering good flame-resistant performance, does not address breathability, allowing body heat to build and causing heat stress injuries. Overcoming this fatal flaw is NuGard First Response Protective Clothing, developed by Ashburn Hill Corp., Angleton, Texas, lightweight coveralls, jackets, and pants that provide protection from heat and flame while keeping the wearer’s body temperature constant. NuGard Clothing is lightweight, flexible, 100% permanent flame resistance, fire blocking properties, and no harmful off-gases from heating, even at extreme temperatures. It is able to provide better cooling in hot conditions and better warmth in cold climates as compared with competitors without sacrificing its fire-resistant performance.
