2008 R&D 100 Winner
First responders have a great need to detect chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and other hazardous compounds in the field. That need is now satisfied with the GUARDION-7 GC-TMS, a small, portable gas chromatograph-toroidal ion trap mass spectrometer (GC-TMS) for field measurement of hazardous chemical compounds. Developed by Torion Technologies, Inc., American Fork, Utah, the GUARDION-7 contains a micro-sized, high-speed capillary GC that provides rapid, high-resolution separation of sample component analytes. The miniaturized TMS enables highly sensitive and selective detection of compounds at unit mass resolution over a mass range of 50 to 500 Daltons, including a wide variety of volatile and semivolatile environmental contaminants, explosives, chemical warfare agents, and a host of other chemical and biological compounds. The GUARDION-7 can decrease sampling costs, increase sampling throughput, and provide time-effective data as compared to conventional sample testing.
