2003 R&D 100 Winner
Development teams from Horiba Instruments, Irvine, Calif., have created their response to the need for improved instrumentation for elemental analysis. The XGT-5000 X-ray Analytical Microscope utilizes energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRD) methods to obtain elemental composition information. It enables users to obtain 2-D analysis on composition and structure of the sample without any pre-treatment of the sample or chamber.
Researchers may find great use in that the device features a newly developed X-ray tube to provide high intensity and depth of focus. The efforts translate into an impressive spatial resolution at 10 microns, highest available to date. With this device it is possible to measure samples containing water or make measurements on samples without damaging effects, which other methods such as EPMA generate. The system boasts a minimal training time of only 2 hrs and has applications in mineral studies, forensic analysis, cytometry in pharmaceutical applications and beyond.
